Clinical aspects of the acute and chronic phases of chikungunya virus infection: still learning

Abstract

Chikungunya virus infection has considerably impacted in the World, especially during the last 3 years (2014-2016), due the epidemics in the Americas. During this period, multiple reports, describing a wider clinical spectrum, have emerged. In this review article, the epidemiological situation updated up to December 2016, as well the main implications of chikungunya in the clinical aspects during its acute and chronic phases, are discussed.
