When a case of hantavirus cardiopulmonary syndrome (HCPS) is diagnosed, the process that led to that infection began much earlier. Disease in humans represents the final link in a complex chain of interactions between the environment, the wildlife reservoir, the virus, and human activities. Understanding this chain is essential for anticipating risky situations and guiding prevention strategies.
